Bedales musicians collaborate for ‘Whole School Concert’
Musicians from Bedales Pre-prep, Prep and Senior schools joined together in October for the annual Whole School Concert, showcasing the musical and performance talents of Bedales’ very youngest through to Sixth Form.
The concert opened with an extraordinary Whole School Devised Performance of the 1928 French traditional carol Now the Green Blade Riseth, with song lyrics originally by J M C Crum. Incorporating two Creation poems by Marcelo Gleiser, the hymn’s lyrics were altered for the occasion by Lucy McIlwraith, Teacher of English at Bedales Senior, with music arranged by Doug McIlwraith, Director of Music at Bedales Senior. The orchestra was accompanied by dancers from the Senior, Prep and Pre-prep, and the audience were invited to sing along in an atmospheric Whole School effort.
Director of Music at Bedales Senior Doug McIlwraith said: “The Whole School Concert once again demonstrated the strength of collaboration across all ages at Bedales, from our youngest students performing alongside the orchestra to Sixth Form students composing original pieces. It was wonderful to incorporate Dance and Drama into this year’s event to showcase the breadth of talent across the School. Bedales is renowned for fostering creativity and individuality, and the Whole School Concert was a wonderful reflection of the passion and expression that we encourage in our students.”
ACS Cobham Student Gains Top IB Mark
Graduating ACS International School Cobham student Frida was awarded the highest grade possible in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), scoring a grand total of 45 out of 45 points.
Frida completed the globally-recognised DP programme in Grade 11 and 12 (equivalent to Sixth Form) at the international school, where students to study a wide breadth of subjects all the way up to age 18. Frida specialised in Business Management, Psychology and Mathematics Applications and Interpretation, with her top grades earning her a place at the prestigious Erasmus University in the Netherlands to study International Business.
£1.5m for Transformational Bursaries at Heathfield School
Heathfield School, Ascot has received a £1.5m grant from the Julia Rausing Trust, to fund 100% transformational bursaries, for students for whom an education at Heathfield would not otherwise be possible. Heathfield is looking forward to working with local schools and the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation, to offer places to children and young people from low-income households who face challenging circumstances. The late British philanthropist, Julia Rausing, a Heathfield alumna, was a passionate supporter of young people and those in need. She attended Heathfield in the early 1980s along with her equally famous older sister, fashion editor Isabella Blow.
In 2014, together with her husband, Hans Rausing, Julia established the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust, now recognised as one of the UK’s largest philanthropic funds. The Trust spearheaded the Charity Survival Fund initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic, distributing £35 million to help charities struggling with fundraising during lockdowns, and making the largest single donation to NHS Charities Together.
Commenting on the grant, Sarah Rollings, Headmistress, said, ’ We are deeply appreciative of this generous donation made in memory of the remarkable Julia Rausing. The Julia Rausing Bursary will transform individual life chances and build a movement of inspirational future role models.’
