Halloween bakes just got a lot more creative, thanks to @mrs_sophie_heaven, the queen of clever, kid-friendly recipes. Her fun, easy bakes transform simple ingredients into spooky – and totally delicious – family favourites. Whether you’re planning a Halloween party or just looking for a rainy-day activity, these three frightfully fun recipes are guaranteed to entertain little bakers and impress the grown-ups too.

Spooky Spider Donuts

Creepy, crawly, and totally delicious! These sweet little spiders will spin their way right into your Halloween party and your tummy!

You will need: Mini ring donuts, Maltesers (or any round chocolate candies), edible googly eyes, black icing (for legs and glue)

Method

  • Lay your web!
  • Place your mini donuts on a tray or a spooky spider web placemat to set the scene. Make the spider’s body.
  • Stick one Malteser in the donut hole using a dab of black icing,  that’s your spider’s round body!
  • Add those googly eyes!
  • Squeeze a tiny dot of icing in front of the Malteser and press on two edible eyes. Boo! Your spider’s watching you already.
  • Draw on some legs!
  • Use the black icing to draw four little legs on each side of the donut, eight legs in total, of course!
  • Let them set.
  • Pop them in the fridge for a few minutes so the icing firms up  and your spiders are ready to crawl!
  • Creep it real and serve!
  • Arrange your spooky spiders on a platter, scatter a few candy webs or flowers around, and watch your guests scream with delight!

Creepy Crawly Surprise Cake

Beware… this isn’t your average Victoria Sponge! Cut inside and …eek!  a horde of spiders comes spilling out! The perfect Halloween trick and treat!

Ingredients:

  • 200g unsalted butter
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon milk
  • 200g self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Whipped cream or buttercream (for filling)
  • Jam (optional)
  • Icing sugar (for dusting)
  • Plastic toy spiders (for a spooky surprise)

Method

  • Preheat your oven to 190°C and line two round cake tins. Add all your cake ingredients to a bowl: butter, sugar, eggs, milk, flour, and baking powder. whisk until light and fluffy like a ghostly cloud. Bake your magic.
  • Pour the mixture evenly into your tins and bake for 20–30 minutes until golden and springy to the touch. Then let them cool completely (no one likes a melted monster!). Prepare the creepy filling.
  • Spread one sponge layer with cream and jam, then here comes the spooky bit …pile in your plastic spiders! (Just make sure no one eats them!) Seal the secret. Place the second sponge on top to hide your spider invasion. Dust the whole cake with icing sugar for a “fresh from the cobweb” look. Reveal the fright!
  • When it’s time to serve, cut a big slice and watch everyone jump as creepy crawlies spill out. Deliciously spooky fun!

Monster Mash Cookies

Bright, bite sized, and just the right amount of spooky! These soft cookies are full of white chocolate chunks and staring candy eyes…a treat that’s watching you!

Ingredients:

  • 100g butter (softened)
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 150g self-raising flour
  • 1 tbsp golden syrup
  • A handful of white chocolate chunks
  • Candy eyes
  • Food colouring (different colours for monster fun)

Method

  1. Mix your magic potion!  In a big bowl, stir together the butter, sugar, flour, golden syrup, and white chocolate chunks until it forms a dough that’s frightfully delicious.
  2. Chill those chills! Pop your dough into the fridge for 20 minutes as this helps it set before you bring your monsters to life.
  3. Divide and conquer. Split the dough into four chunks, one for each monster colour.
  4. Get colourful! Add a few drops of food colouring to each chunk and knead gently with your hands until the colour is spooky and swirled.
  5. Shape your little monsters. Roll each bit into small balls and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake and beware! Bake for 12 minutes …they should be soft, not crispy. Monsters don’t like being overbaked!
  7. Add their eyes! While the cookies are still warm, gently press in a few candy eyes so your monsters can seeee you!
  8. Cool and creep! Leave them to cool (if you can resist!). Then serve up your colourful, googly-eyed cookie crew for some Halloween fun.

These Halloween bakes tick every box: they’re simple enough for kids to help with, quick to make, and guaranteed to bring the fun factor to your kitchen. Whether you go for the spooky spiders, the surprise-filled cake or the colourful cookie crew, these recipes prove that Halloween doesn’t need to be scary — just deliciously imaginative.
