Following the success of the recent performances of his Don Quixote, Carlos Acosta’s Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to the Sadler’s Wells stage with a triple bill of works chosen specially by Carlos: a rare chance to see a major piece from the master of modern ballet Jiří Kylián; a first opportunity to enjoy the superbly symphonic work of Uwe Scholz, a choreographer’s whose early death cut short a stellar career; and Morgann Runacre-Temple, a rising star recently lauded for her new production of Coppélia which premiered at the Edinburgh Festival.
Much-missed German choreographer Uwe Scholz worked regularly with classical repertoire – and never more dramatically than in his setting of Beethoven’s vibrant Seventh Symphony, a work famously described by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’. Choreographer Morgann Runacre-Temple and composer Mikael Karlsson team up for the world premiere of Hotel, a surreal journey into the secrets and lies that live behind closed doors. And to close, Jiří Kylián’s magnificent Forgotten Land is ‘a great primer to why Kylián is one of the most revered choreographers of the 20th century’ (The Guardian) – a gripping journey into memory and loss set to Benjamin Britten’s magnificent Sinfonia da Requiem.
Running Time: 2 hours 25 minutes (including one 25 minute interval and one 20 minute interval)
